BACKGROUND DESIGN IN ANIMATION FILMS:
CITIES, COMMUNITIES AND THE RELATION
TO ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN
Research Thesis | Vasilis Vikeloudas

This research is an exploration of the depicted worlds in animation films, as if they were real, with an architectural approach. It's a trip in these parallel cartoon universes, traveling through paintings, scenery and digital 3D models, aboard the ships of imagination and immersion. The goal is to decode their symbols and meanings and point the ways they influence the heroes and protagonists of the stories; to realize how the designing methods and media influence the spatial rendition of the depicted worlds; and thus, to find the relation of the producted environment with its subject: the character, and with its maker: the architect.
Starting with the concept and importance of the fairy tales throughout history, leading to the animation film production, delving through the layout and background designing methods and principles, I found myself in the craving of researching 50 examples of communities, depicted in our favourite animation productions from Holywood, in matters of scale, nature and type, but also in practicality, feeling and realism.
